Hallway Decor
I don’t know what took me so long, but I finally completed my hallway decor! It’s been months since we revamped our hallway space, removing a huge, cumbersome piece of furniture and changing the paint. You can read about that here and here. Once we got that change complete, the hallway became the collect-all. I was sick of it! I had the perfect wall-hangings, the perfect table, and the perfect things to put on that table right here at Big Creek…it was time to use them!
I’ve shared before the artistic talents of Papa (my step-father) and Daddy-O (my father) {click here to catch up}. I haven’t shared these particular items in great detail, so today’s the day.
Hallway Decor
Papa went through a fish carving phase, and I have several products of that phase. These gorgeous, hand-carved fish used to hang in the sun room, but we had to take them down to get that room re-framed and painted. I knew I wanted to display the fish, but the house has been in some state of disrepair or remodeling since we moved in, and I was scared for those poor fishies’ lives. I wrapped them carefully in soft towels and tissue paper and put them in a plastic tote until this past weekend. I finally got sick of looking at that tote in my hallway floor, along with all the other junk the hallway seemed to catch, and decided to make the hand-carved fish the focal point of my new hallway decor.
More Hallway Decor
To add to the “handmade Dad” feel (is that a real decorating term? It sure is for me!), I brought in the pieces of Daddy-O’s pottery that I’ve managed to collect over the years. These have been on my dining room table, but I think they look perfect as part of my new hallway decor. Daddy-O actually taught pottery on the college level, and has always enjoyed it. He’s very good at it, too! I’m so thrilled to have these pieces of his artwork to display and use.
Who really thinks about hallway decor? In our last house the hallway was so skinny that no one really noticed the pictures I hung in there, and they collected enough dust to choke a goat. Now that I have a hallway large enough to be a small bedroom, I realize that hallway decor is important! Our hallway is the very center of our house, is home to the staircase, and allows entry to the bathroom that guests use. I needed to think about decorating my hallway! The mess it had become, after all of Coach’s hard work making it pretty, was disgraceful. The hallway has had a very dramatic transformation, and deserved to be done right!
Now, I just need to find a way to cover the water heater in the cranny under the stairs.
I’ve thought about making a curtain or adding some louvered doors (that will be a hard size to find), but I’m just not sure yet what I want to do. You can probably tell that the floor is still not finished, as well. That’s coming soon. Yep, our home is about to become insanely disheveled once again. We still have lots of floor work in our future, and all my beautiful hallway decor will have to be removed…but only for a short while! I’ll have to lovingly wrap up Papa’s hand-carved fish and Daddy-O’s pottery and provide serious protection for them both…again. Once the floors are finished, I will put all my treasured hallway decor back in place and complete the room, including covering the water heater with something!
The Transformation
It’s still a huge improvement, don’t ya think?

I just love how we’ve revamped our hallway! It’s like having a whole new room in our home.

I have one fish and still don’t know what to do with it. Maybe you can help me decide?

I’ll be glad to!

Martie that is quite the transformation. I can’t believe it was the same space. I love how you painted the wood a nice light color. It really opens up the space. And now you can display your families artwork with pride. As for the water heater, I like your idea of using a curtain.

Thank you! It was nerve-wracking going with white, but I wanted that clean, crisp look (and to be far away from that awful pale green). We ended up super happy with our choice…it’s Dove White in Glidden, and turned out clean and crisp, but also soft. So glad you like it! That room really is our biggest transformation yet!

Martie, your father and father-in-law are both very talented men!! Those fish are amazing and the pottery is beautiful!! I like how you used both their talents to decorate your hallway. It’s a lovely transformation, and that must feel so good to see the space coming together. Can’t wait to see what you do with the floors. 🙂

Thank you so much! It’s cool to come from such talented folks! The ripping-out of floors begins in two weeks (eeeeek!), so I’ll definitely be sharing. Thanks for stopping by! 🙂

What about a screen made from a couple of old shutters? I think that would look great over the water heater opening!

I really like that idea, too! I’m hoping we can go to the Habitat for Humanity store soon…I bet they’ll have something! Thanks Mary Jean! Miss ya!
