I Love Halloween Month!

I’ve been having fun with my spooky story in my last two posts, Can’t Go Home Again, and Can’t Go Home Again Part II.  I’m sure you’re all foaming at the mouth to read the dramatic ending, but you’ll have to wait until Wednesday.  Halloween is a month-long event at my house, and I couldn’t resist a little spooky fiction to spice up the month.

It was a busy, fun-filled weekend here at Big Creek.  Friday night was the last home football game of the season, and Pooh and the band put on a stellar performance!  Tigger held on to Pooh’s shako during the third quarter, while Pooh was recuperating and having a snack after the half-time show.  I see another little band-geek in the making!

On Saturday, Jimmie and her fabulous friend, Phranke (a lovely blue-eyed, blonde-haired girl), came for a visit. Jimmie wanted to spend some quality birthday-time with Madre (and borrow my sewing machine for her Halloween costume), and Phranke, who is a marketing and design genius, came to help me develop a logo for all of my ventures…Etsy, this blog, and my various social media accounts (more on that coming soon).

I lured Phranke here with promises of my best Halloween treats, and it worked! Snacking on sweet and salty treats, like Boo Mix, Frightening Fingers and Caramelized Cheese Balls during October is just as important as candy canes and eggnog in December! I knew Phranke would be super-productive if I filled her full of sugar, because who isn’t? She really did come through for me and design a wonderful logo, using my very own sketches in the design. She’s amazing, and I’m so glad she was here for some Halloween traditions.

caramelized cheese balls

Instead of focusing and giving Phranke my undivided attention, I spent half my time destroying my kitchen while making one of my best homemade Halloween treats: caramelized cheese balls  (<—- click that for the printable recipe!) These bad boys have now moved to the top of the list of my best homemade Halloween treats!

These sugary-coated cheese balls are astoundingly delicious.  One of our fun salon clients has been bringing us each a bag of these sweet, salty, cheesy treats for the past 3 or 4 Halloweens, and finally brought in the recipe to share.  It makes a TON, but you can be fun, like said client, and give away bags of them to your hairstylist and her coworkers!  They are also a great school party treat, since they don’t contain nuts and are gluten free Halloween snacks! Making them was an adventure…

but so worth the trouble and mess.  I might have to clean my oven now (yeah, right!), but I’ll make them again next year, for sure!  I got my cute little treat bags on Amazon, and tied them with baker’s twine (Phranke helped!).  I loved the little round shape of these, an that link will get you 100 of them for cheap (around $3.50 at the time of posting).

frightening fingers

We have some die-hard Halloween traditions around here, as well.  One is Madre’s frightening fingers(<—–click that for the printable recipe!)  best homemade Halloween treats

Gnarly looking little dudes, aren’t they?  I promise, these little shortbread cookies taste much better than they look!  There’s a method to the madness, which I photographed so you could see.  Everyone loves Frightening Fingers..(okay, maybe not everyone…Amy’s pre-school teacher wanted nothing to do with them), and our Halloween just isn’t complete without them!

Madre likes to use a pickle fork for the big knuckle.

Rows and rows of severed fingers!

Be sure to print those recipes and give them a try! Just don’t get skeered of the fingers!

boo mix

The second tradition that we can’t live without is one I’ve shared in the past:  Boo Mix.  It’s the perfect Halloween party snack mix, although it does contain peanuts. Of course, you’ll need to leave those out if you have anyone with nut allergies attending the party!

To get this Halloween snack mix recipe (which is just a bunch of ingredients you dump together), check out my previous post Weekend Sneak-In: More Halloween Fun!  That post is two years old, and you’ll also get to see Pooh’s fabulous Raggedy Ann costume that my good friend Lotus made for her.  Pooh is planning to re-use that blue tutu for this year’s costume, which I can share soon!  Everyone still loves and requests my Boo Mix, so I threw it together this weekend, too!

See Madre’s chocolate birthday cake cooling in the background? Yum! Also, you can see I’ve gotten less picky on some of my brands.  I’ll never use anything but Brach’s candy corn and Planter’s Peanuts, though!  Nevah!

It’s just a simple Halloween snack mix recipe that I kind of made up years ago, and it is highly requested. We bagged it all up to deliver to Tigger’s teachers and my salon gals, along with the caramelized cheese balls and frightening fingers.

Those cute pumpkin treat bags came from Amazon, too! I usually keep a stock-pile of different kinds of treat bags, and Amazon always has an adorable selection. Check out these and these while you’re there!

more fall fun

Saturday night we drove to the state just south of us for one of Pooh’s band competitions, where the gang got superior ratings, and the percussion section took Best In Show….HUGE congrats to the drum line and the whole AWESOME band! best homemade Halloween treats

Sunday we slept in, and then spent the day planning and cooking for Madre’s birthday feast.  Here’s a peek at her birthday dinner:

Trust me, it was the best steak dinner EVER!  Here’s the cake I taunted you with earlier, followed by the birthday girl, herself, blowing out the candles (we figured 2 candles was better than 72…we wanted to get on with eating the cake)!

From my favorite cake cook book…The Cake Mix Doctor! This is “Darn Good Chocolate Cake”, without the chocolate chips, and “Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting”, both in the book.

Today, Madre and I are heading out with our girlfriends (the WWU, in case you’ve forgotten) to celebrate even more!  We love to do birthdays together, as you know.  Who knows what we’ll get into!

So, yeah, it was a crazy-busy weekend, but I loved every minute of it! Making my best homemade Halloween treats was probably the most fun of all. Things aren’t slowing down any this week, either; it’s my last week in the salon, and Halloween is Saturday! EEEK!  I really must come up with a costume…
